1. Where can you save the diagrams?
CIO level dashboards and specific dashboards not associated with a service will automatically try to save in the Live Maps authoring MP. The exception would be if you save it in a folder that was created by an unsealed MP. Then, it will save it in that MP. Alternatively, if you create a service, it will ask to create its own management pack. Any diagrams you make can be saved in that service MP.
Converting a list doesn’t move the diagram into another management pack or make a copy of it, but switches the setting on the XML level in that management pack for that dashboard (Note: For licensing purposes, this doesn’t take up a dashboard license. It will re-edit the one that you have.).
2. How do you change an icon list to a text list? In the summary view, the computers are listed as icons across and down the screen (tile format). Some prefer to see a list view. Is there a way of doing that, and does it bring a limitation in terms of the diagram?
You have the ability to show a different type of view (check top left for the view column to set to list view), and it can be grouped by class and host. If you have a large volume of objects, we recommend you use the list view. If you do it in the diagram, you can control exactly where they are placed. However, the limitation is that this is a manual process.
In the List functionality on the web front end, you have the ability to filter out different health status.
Keep an eye on our next release, as this feature will be further expanded for users to interact directly without requiring editing rights.
3. Can you add a hot spot to a section of a tile?
Yes, but it doesn’t link to the tile. What you do is add the hot spot on top of the tile. Ensure that the hot spot sits on top of the tile and then that area of the tile becomes clickable as the hot spot. You can put the hot spot wherever you want (the whole thing can be made into a hotspot.)
4. Is there a limit to the number of objects a diagram can hold?
There is no limit, but there are a few factors from a SCOM and Live Maps point of view that you have to consider. The more objects there are on a diagram, the greater the chances your dashboard will slow down. We query for the health state, properties, and alerts for each object. The more objects there are, the more queries we must make to SCOM, and that can take longer than you wish, especially if SCOM is running slow. Alerts tend to have the greatest impact. Too many open alerts can greatly affect the health of a dashboard. We don’t recommend using a dynamic rule such as showing all computers on one diagram. Manually placing them yourself will also take a lot of time. Again, we recommend using a list view instead of a diagram view to achieve automation using dynamic rules. The best practice is to combine both types of views to give you the ultimate control and yet show a dashboard that helps understand the impact of any alert (please see our out of the box services to give you an idea of how this is achieved).
5. Can you place a widget on a dashboard?
Yes, you can add certain widgets as shown during the webinar, but for the HTML5 widgets, you will be combining this dashboard with other widgets in the front end Summary Dashboard feature.
6. Any thoughts about an online place for users to submit or retrieve images?
Yes, this is in progress, but no details are available yet.
7. Is it possible to receive an unplaced members alert from Live Maps? For example, you are running a membership rule on a diagram, and it adds unplaced members. You want to be informed that there are unplaced members that have been added as you don’t look at the diagram regularly.
Live Maps doesn’t do that yet, but it is a good suggestion. Dynamic rule lives and breathes within SCOM. A monitor can be added on change member state, and you would receive an alert from that. This is not something we do out of the box, but we can look at development on that one.
You can get an alert if the group changes health state. Every group you create in Live Maps also writes a monitor, which is switched off by default, but you could use it to create an alert (e.g. if one of the unplaced members comes in and has a red state, you will be informed. However, you will be informed that the health state has changed, not that there are new members).
8. What is the recommended number of custom services to be created?
There is no limit except for the numbers of Live Maps dashboards you have as part of your license. We do recommend covering every single one of your IT services in SCOM and map out everything that is important to you. If you have an unlimited subscription, you can create as many services as you want.
Every service creates a Management Pack, which creates groups and calculations within SCOM. The more you add, the more you’ll have to scale your SCOM out to handle the workload.
By mapping them all, you will have the ability to auto update CMDBs that you connect Live Maps to. This way, you can have your Service CI relationships known for everything in your environment that is monitored.
9. Can we create a template for a custom service?
We have a blog article that allows you to auto-create services from CSV files of components that are in there. We also recommend a blog article on how to do a quick insert (create a template, copy service over, and change the computer groups within your references).
10. Do you have a good example to an SLA diagram?

SLO objects created in SCOM don’t produce performance tracking metrics. They produce a health state and track the property value stored in SCOM. We are working on ways of converting SLO data into a performance counter, which unlocks all of those performance widgets whether in a diagram or a summary dashboard. For now, you can use the SLO object and show the property to get the last known value (hourly update) in a diagram.
