Think proactive monitoring for Teams Phone is too good to be true? Think again.

February 11, 2025

Collaboration platforms like Microsoft Teams are absolutely central to how enterprises get business done these days. But sometimes the fastest, most direct way to answer a question, solve a problem or make a connection is still to pick up the phone and call.

The value of solutions like Microsoft Teams Phone is that they offer the best of both worlds: the simplicity and efficiency of voice communication integrated with digital collaboration tools and capabilities.

That’s great for users — but tough on IT teams and managed service providers (MSPs) tasked with ensuring a frictionless digital experience. Why? Because up to now there haven’t been any tools for IT groups to proactively monitor Teams Phone performance.

Fortunately, that’s changed with the latest update to Martello’s Vantage DX in February 2025 — the industry’s first tool to provide proactive monitoring for Teams Phone.

Making proactive monitoring for Teams Phone a reality

Proactive monitoring is critical because it allows IT teams and MSPs to get in front of problems, identifying and addressing issues before users are affected.

Vantage DX already enables proactive monitoring for Teams meetings via synthetic testing: automated background checks on the performance of solution features  and functions using test traffic. If a problem shows up, IT can get to the root cause and fix it without any disruption to productivity or quality of experience.

This is harder to do for Teams Phone because its IT environment is more complex. Connecting the local enterprise network to the public switched telephone network (PSTN) requires a session border controller (SBC) to ‘translate’ traffic from IP to session initiation protocol (SIP). That conversion and the extra handoffs involved create more chances for issues to occur.

Martello has come up with a way for Vantage DX to address these realities and make proactive monitoring possible for Teams Phone.

How Vantage DX works

Vantage DX conducts outbound synthetic testing from Teams Phone to recipient numbers on the public switched telephone network  (PSTN). It evaluates call quality at every node and handoff.

Unlike other performance monitoring solutions, Vantage DX can follow traffic through the session border controller (SBC) and incorporate Microsoft call quality data, dramatically increasing visibility for IT and MSP teams and speeding up troubleshooting from hours to minutes.

Kudos and recognition

The new functionality bundled into Vantage DX marks a world first, finally making synthetic testing available for all Microsoft Teams core and premium services: Teams Meetings, Teams Rooms and Teams Phone. It allows enterprise IT and MSP teams to gain much-needed proactivity in digital experience monitoring and management.

The enhancements to Vantage DX build on what’s already widely seen as a leading proactive monitoring solution. In a recent product review, tech analyst Brien Posey rates Vantage DX 4.9 out of 5 for its mix of purpose-built features for Microsoft Teams.
